Why join Sale Youth Choirs?

If you love singing, are aged between 7 and 18 years old and want to sing in harmony with other like-minded people, no matter what your musical experience then SYC is for you! We have 2 choirs for different age groups. In both choirs you will learn new skills, make new friends, learn to read music, become a more confident singer and have many performance opportunities whilst being coached by Matt, our artistic director, who has trained some of the UK's best young voices including the Halle Youth, Training and Children's choirs as well as Opera North Youth and Children's chorus.

Which SYC Choir is for me?

Our choirs are split into 2 separate choirs:

SYC Children's Choir

This choir is for anybody aged between 7 and 11 years old. In this choir you will; develop your singing skills by playing musical games through a Kodaly based approach, learn lots of new songs often singing in 2 or 3 part harmony and have numerous performance opportunities throughout the year to put into practice what you have been learning.

Singing in choirs is lots of fun and you will make many new friends!

Sale Youth Choir

This choir is for anybody aged between 12 and 18 years old. In this choir you will continue your vocal development, learn to read sheet music fluently, improve your musicianship skills through ear training and regular vocal exercises. This choir is an SATB choir which means we frequently sing in 4 part harmony with a range of male and female voices. You will receive training from professional choral practitioners every week aiming towards performance opportunities.

You will be surrounded by like-minded individuals and make lifelong friendships.

How much does it cost?

Come down to your first rehearsal free of charge to see whether SYC is for you!

It costs £5 p/rehearsal to sing with SYC. This can be paid; weekly or termly.

A bursary scheme is available for any families who may struggle to meet these costs. It is important to us at SYC that no young person should feel they cannot be involved due to financial circumstances. Please contact us through saleyouthchoirs@gmail.com to discuss further. Any information received will be treated in complete confidence

Safety and wellbeing at SYC

Each SYC choir will take a register at the start and end of each rehearsal and monitor attendance and general well being of members throughout the year.

Safety and wellbeing of all SYC members is a priority and our staff members and volunteers are DBS checked and inducted through our safe guarding policy.

New SYC members are supported through their first few weeks. Many new members join not knowing anybody but quickly make friends within the SYC family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which voice part should I sing with Sale Youth Choir? S,A,T or B?

As you get older your voice will change and develop meaning that you will feel more comfortable singing in a particular voice part. 1) Soprano - Higher female voice 2) Alto - Lower female voice 3) Tenor - Higher male voice 4) Bass - Lower male voice If you don't know which part you should be singing, don't worry! Our experienced and professional team will be able to point you in the right direction upon meeting you. Throughout the year we will regularly check that you are singing the part that suits you best.

What if I'm a boy and my voice is changing?

You may have heard the term 'broken voice'? We prefer the term 'changing voice' - it's much less scary! Your voice changing is a natural part of growing up and it doesn't mean you have to stop singing. It will mean that your voice feels different for a while until it settles into a new voice type, usually tenor or bass. Our specialist staff will guide you through this change and put you with the appropriate part of the choir whilst your voice is changing.

Can my parents stay during the rehearsal?

We ask parents not to stay during rehearsals. We have a qualified team to ensure the safety of all children who attend SYC rehearsals. We find that this approach improves concentration and focus levels in the rehearsal space. We will have termly performances to show all parents what we have achieved.

Do I need to have loads of singing experience?

You don't need to have previous experience of singing in groups or choirs, just a willingness to learn and become part of SYC. If you do already have lots of experience with singing and choirs - great, we will help to further and nurture your existing musical skills.

Are there auditions for SYC?

There are no auditions for SYC. We are an open access, aspirational choir for all young people in Sale and the surrounding areas. However, that does not mean we do not strive for excellence in youth singing. Here at SYC, we believe that given the right opportunities and training all young people can learn the skills needed to sing as part of a truly excellent youth choir.
